Stonebreaker Barn

This stately old barn is typical of many found in Long Valley and Round Valley.

  1. Nice shot, Sheila! Upon closer inspection, this barn was not built by Finns. They tightly fit logs using corner notches of the double, full-dovetail, or locking dovetail styles. We met the former owner (riding by on his 3-wheeler) who said the foundation wasn't as sturdy as it might have been because mica in the stone made it relatively unstable.

  2. Thank you, Diane. Good information, too. The cornerstone at the left in this photo reveals how the foundation has eroded and fallen away as the ground sunk.
